Al-Mundhiri on love for the sake of Allah
Al-Mundhiri recorded the following chapter in his book Al-Targhib wal-Tarhib:
Encouragement to love for the sake of Allah AlmightyAnas ibn Malik reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
None will taste the sweetness of faith until he loves a person only for the sake of Allah, until he would rather be thrown in the fire than to return to unbelief, and until Allah and his messenger are more beloved to him than anything else.Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
Verily, Allah will say on the Day of Resurrection: Where are those who love each other for the sake of my glory? Today, I will shelter them in my shade on a day when there is no shade but mine.Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
Whoever would be pleased to taste the sweetness of faith, let him love a person only for the sake of Allah. In another narration, the Prophet said:
Whoever intends to achieve the reality of faith, let him love a person only for the sake of Allah.”Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
There are seven whom Allah will shade on a day when there is no shade but his. They are a just ruler, a youth who grew up in the worship of Allah, one whose heart is attached to the mosques, two who love each other, meet ,and depart from each other for the sake of Allah, a man who is tempted by a beautiful woman of high status but he rejects her, saying ,’I fear Allah,’ one spends in charity and conceals it such that his right hand does not know what his left hand has given, and one who remembered Allah in private and he wept.Abu Darda reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
No two men love each other for the sake of Allah, behind their backs, but that the most beloved of them to Allah has the strongest love for his companion.Anas ibn Malik reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
No two persons love each other for the sake of Allah but that the better of the two is the one with the strongest love for his companion.Al-Munawi commented on this tradition, saying:
أَشَدُّهُمَا حُبًّا لِصَاحِبِهِ أي في الله تعالى لا لغرض دنيوي وتأكد المحبة من الحقوق التي يوجبها عقد الصحبة والضابط فيه أن يعامله بما يحب أن يعامل به فمن لا يحب لأخيه ما يحب لنفسه فأخوته نفاق وهو عليه في الدنيا والآخرة‘The strongest love for his companion,’ meaning, for the sake of Allah Almighty and no other worldly purpose. He affirms love among the rights that are obligatory in a bond of fellowship. The criteria of it is that he treats him as he would love to be treated by him. For whoever does not love for his brother what he loves for himself, his fellowship is hypocrisy and it will be against him in the world and in the Hereafter.Source: Fayḍ al-Qadīr 5/435
Abdullah ibn Amr reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
The best companion to Allah is the best to his companions, and the best neighbor to Allah is the best to his neighbors.Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
A man set out to visit his brother from another town, so Allah sent an angel to watch over his steps. When the angel came to him, he said: Where are you going? The man said: I am visiting a brother of mine in this town. The angel said: Do you have a favor over him to be repaid? He said: No, only that I love him for the sake of Allah Almighty. The angel said: I am a messenger from Allah to tell you that Allah loves you as you love him.‘Ubadah ibn al-Samit reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
Allah Almighty said: My love is a right upon those who love each other for my sake. My love is a right upon those who visit each other for my sake. My love is a right upon those who sit together for my sake. My love is a right upon those who maintain relations for my sake.Mu’adh ibn Jabal reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
Allah Almighty said: My love is assured for those who love each other for my sake, who sit together for my sake, who visit each other for my sake, and who spend on each other for my sake.In another narration, the Prophet said:
Allah Almighty said: Those who love each other for the sake of my glory will be upon pulpits of light, admired by the prophets and the martyrs.‘Amr ibn ‘Abasah reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
Allah Almighty said: My love is a right upon those who befriend each other for my sake. My love is a right upon those who defend each other for my sake.Ibn Abbas reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
Verily, Allah will have an audience on the Day of Resurrection, sitting at his right side of the Throne, and both sides are honored as the right. They will be upon pulpits of light and there will be light upon their faces, yet they are not prophets, nor martyrs, nor disciples.
It was said, “O Messenger of Allah, who are they?” The Prophet said:
Those who loved each other for the glory of Allah Almighty.Umar ibn al-Khattab reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
Verily, among the servants of Allah are people who are neither prophets nor martyrs, yet the prophets and martyrs will admire them on the Day of Resurrection due to their position before Allah Almighty.
They said, “O Messenger of Allah, tell us who they are.” The Prophet said:
They are people who love each other with the spirit of Allah, despite having no shared family relations or wealth. By Allah, there will be light on their faces and they will be upon light. They will not fear when people are afraid, and they will not be sad when people are grieved.
Then, the Prophet recited the verse:
Certainly, the allies of Allah will have no fear, nor will they grieve. (10:62)Al-‘Irbad ibn Sariyah reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
Allah Almighty said: Those who loved each other for the sake of my glory will be in the shade of my throne, on a day there is no shade but mine.Abu Malik al-Ashari reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
O people, listen, understand, and know that Allah Almighty has servants who are neither prophets, nor martyrs, yet the prophets and martyrs admire them for their position and closeness to Allah.
A
man among the bedouins of a distant land came and he waved to the
Prophet, saying, “O Prophet of Allah, describe them to us.” The Prophet
was pleased by the bedouin’s question, and he said:
They are people from faraway lands and different tribes. They have no close familial relationship between them. They sincerely love each other for the sake of Allah. Allah will place them on pulpits of light on the Day of Resurrection and grant them an audience. He will place light on their faces and light on their garments. People will be terrified on the Day of Resurrection, yet they will not be terrified. They are the allies of Allah, upon whom there is no fear or grief. (10:62)Abu Umamah reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
A servant does not love another servant for the sake of Allah Almighty but that Allah will honor him.Abu Umamah reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
Whoever loves for the sake of Allah, hates for the sake of Allah, gives for the sake of Allah, and withholds for the sake of Allah has perfected the faith.Al-Azimabadi commented on this tradition, saying:
That he hates for the sake of Allah does not mean he harms the one he hates. Rather, the hatred is for his unbelief and disobedience.Source: ‘Awn al-Ma’būd 4681
Al-Bara’ ibn ‘Azib reported: We were sitting with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and he said:
Which handle of Islam is the most trustworthy?
They said, “Prayer.” The Prophet said:
It is good, but that is not it.
They said, “Charity.” The Prophet said:
It is good, but that is not it.
They said, “Fasting the month of Ramadan.” The Prophet said:
It is good, but that is not it.
They said, “The Hajj pilgrimage.” The Prophet said:
It is good, but that is not it.
They said, “Jihad.” The Prophet said:
It is good, but that is not it. Verily, the most trustworthy handle of faith is to love and hate for the sake of Allah.Anas ibn Malik reported: A bedouin asked the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, “When is the Hour?” The Prophet said:
What have you prepared for it?
The man said, “Love for Allah and his messenger.” The Prophet said:
You will be with those whom you love.Abdullah ibn Mas’ud reported: A man came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and he said, “O Messenger of Allah, what do you say about a man who loves a people but his deeds do not compare to theirs?” The Prophet said:
A person will be with those whom he loves.Abu Dharr reported: He said, “O Messenger of Allah, a man loves a people but he cannot do good deeds like they do.” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
You, O Abu Dharr, will be with those you love.
Abu Dharr said, “I love Allah and his messenger.” The Prophet said:
Verily, you will be with those you love.
